International Cooperation I Transfer

7th EU Research Framework Programme

The 7th EU Research Framework Programme (FP7) was the world's largest funding programme for research projects at the time and ran for the first time over a period of seven years, from 2007 to 2013. During its term, a budget of more than 54 billion euros was available. A large number of the topics advertised were defined by the EU and published in the work programmes in the so-called "top-down principle". This was the case in the "themes" of FP7, which followed this principle almost exclusively. In other areas of FP7, such as the "Ideas" and "People" programmes, no topic specifications were made; here the so-called "bottom-up principle" was applied.

Melt spun fibres based on compostable biopolymers for application in automotive interiors

Coordination

Asociación de Investigación de la Industria Textil (AITEX) / ES

Technology area

Bio-based textile materials

Application area

Automotive sector, vehicle interiors

Short description

The development of textile fabrics (nonwovens and woven fabrics) made of bio-based and biodegradable polylactide (PLA) fibres was the subject of the project. The aim was to substitute the polyester and polypropylene fibres currently used for car interiors with PLA fibres. By using special additives, specific property improvements (e.g. abrasion resistance, light resistance or flame resistance) were achieved in order to fulfil the material parameters required in automotive construction. The modified PLA fibres were processed into nonwovens and a fabric made of PLA filament yarn was developed as a decorative material.  Two nonwoven layers and the fabric were processed into a composite made of 100% bio-based material and tested as a moulded part for an interior door trim.

Boosting collaboration between research centres and industry to enhance rapid industrial uptake of innovative functional textile structures and textile related materials in a mondial market

Coordination

Universiteit Gent/BE

Technology area

Network, multidisciplinary international cooperation

Application area

Functional textile materials and structures

Short description

The 2BFUNTEX project was a European Coordination and Support Action (CSA) with the aim to bring together all innovation actors in the field of functional textile structures and materials and to strengthen multidisciplinary cooperation between universities, research institutes, industrial partners and associations. Deficits and technological barriers in the timely and effective transfer of know-how from research to practice in the field of functional materials were identified on the basis of surveys in SMEs. Solutions were developed on how to overcome these obstacles by means of improved cooperation and modern communication.

Advanced technologies for bomb-proof cargo containers and blast containment units for the retrofitting of passenger airplanes

Coordination

D'Appolonia S.p.A., Italy

Technology area

Security research, mobility

Application area

Transport, cargo, aircraft, security containers

Short description

Following the presentation in 2011 of the prototype explosion-proof textile baggage container developed in the FLY-BAG1 project, the FLY-BAG2 research team has developed three novel devices and also tested them in decommissioned A320 and B-747 aircrafts. These include a soft-shell container that is inserted into the baggage compartment of narrow-body aircrafts, a pallet for wide-body aircrafts and a slightly smaller FLY-BAG as a "cabin device" for the passenger compartment. This is intended to be useful for scenarios when a passenger is discovered with a bomb.

Project duration
