ERASMUS Project SiT: Exploring textile sustainability at the STFI

As part of the ERASMUS+ project “SiT – Sustainability in Textiles”, the coordinator from ITKAM (Italian Chamber of Commerce in Germany) and nine other project participants visited the STFI last Tuesday. The guests are currently undertaking further training to become biotechnologists or textile recycling managers and took the opportunity to learn about the possibilities of textile recycling and textile sustainability at the STFI. They began with an introduction to the institute’s work and research priorities. They were then shown around various specialist departments. In the Textile Recycling department, they were able to learn about innovative processes for recycling materials. In the spinning mill, the processing of fibres into yarns was clearly demonstrated. The Centre of Competence in Nonwovens also presented modern technologies and applications in the field of nonwoven fabrics from a sustainability perspective. Another focus was on technical woven and knitted fabrics, which offer a wide range of applications in industry and agriculture. The guests found the demonstration of processes for the functionalisation of textiles particularly at the lab interesting. The tour offered participants valuable insights into sustainable developments and research approaches within the textile industry.
