Centre of Excellence in Nonwovens

The Centre of Excellence in Nonwovens is one of Europe’s leading research institutions specialising in nonwovens. Founded in 2000, the STFI brings together all nonwoven formation and consolidation processes in the fields of fibre nonwovens and spunbond nonwovens under one roof.

The Centre of Excellence in Nonwovens sees itself as a point of contact for scientific enquiries relating to nonwovens and peripheral technologies. In addition to its existing expertise in nonwovens, the STFI is distinguished above all by an impressive variety of equipment that is unique in Europe. All nonwoven formation and consolidation processes for fibre and spunbond nonwovens are brought together at STFI. Our extensive know-how and the targeted pooling of expertise with other areas, such as mechanical textile recycling and functionalisation, are key guarantees for the successful execution of research and development tasks.

We view nonwovens as indispensable textile solutions for circular economy and cost-efficiency criteria, as well as for technological innovations in hygiene, filtration and the automotive sector.

Alongside topics such as electromobility, filtration and bio-based materials, our agenda includes resource-saving process optimisations based on intelligent process control.

Non-woven fabric production

We love a technological challenge. Creating textile fabrics from exotic, delicate or newly developed materials is our passion. We push the boundaries of the process thanks to our many years of expertise and our curiosity in research.

Fibre processing and yarn production

The reliable processing of alternative natural fibres is key to a sustainable textile industry. Using a fully equipped cleaning plant and three variable-speed carding machines, we develop card slivers from innovative materials and test yarn formation in spinning trials. We work primarily with fibres of a length comparable to that of cotton and also test fibres from mechanical recycling.

Fibre, spunbond and meltblown nonwovens
