JEC Innovation Award 2024
Green snowboard made in Saxony awarded in Paris
Green snowboards from silbaerg combine natural fibres with in-house recycled materials adapting extremely flexible to different riding situations. Since 2011, the company silbaerg from Chemnitz has been producing high-quality snowboards, which are manufactured by using the patented A.L.D.tech®. A.L.D. stands for Anisotropic Layer Design and enables demanding riding situations to be mastered. The green snowboards have now been honoured with the JEC Innovation Award 2024 in Paris.
The secret of silbaerg snowboards lies in the handmade A.L.D.tech® layers surrounding the wood core, whereas other suppliers use classic industrially manufactured bi-, tri- or quadraxial layers. Natural fibres in the form of tapes were used for the first time back in 2015. With its latest product line, silbaerg is continuing on its path towards sustainable products by focussing on regional products. Thus, hemp fibre tapes from Sachsenleinen GmbH (Markkleeberg, Saxony) have been used. The raw material for these tapes originate from the fields between Chemnitz and Leipzig. Carbon fibre tapes are also required to reinforce the boards. Here, silbaerg draws on research results from the STFI: carbon fibre waste from silbaerg is reused in the form of recycled nonwovens. The offcuts being accumulated in the production process at silbaerg are later on further processed and turned into carbon fibre nonwovens at STFI using plant technology of its Center for Textile Lightweight Engineering. Following, carbon fibre nonwovens are made up into carbon fibre tapes, which together with hemp fibre tapes reinforcing the structure in the green snowboard. The majority of these materials originates from Saxony.
The first snowboards are currently being tested by silbaerg team riders. These test boards also use a new, bio-based resin system from bto-epoxy GmbH (Amstetten, Austria), which has a bio content of 31 % in the resin and 54 % in the hardener. The launch of the new product line on the market is planned for 2024.
The company silbaerg was able to prove to experts that the concept of sustainability in the field of sporting goods is convincing: on 8 February 2024, the "Green Snowboard" with A.L.D.tech® was honoured with the JEC Innovation Award in Paris. The JEC Innovation Award is presented in the run-up to the annual JEC World, the leading lightweight construction trade fair.
The green snowboard from silbaerg can be seen from 5 to 7 March 2024 in hall 5, stand D107 at this year's JEC in Paris. Together with our partners Cetex Institut gGmbH, Chemnitz University of Technology - Institute of Lightweight Structures (IST), LSE-Lightweight Structures Engineering GmbH, we will be at the joint stand of Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen GmbH and look forward to seeing you there!
