Offcuts as starting material for basalt fibre nonwovens
Within the project, STFI developed a nonwoven based on basalt fibre offcuts with a mass per unit area of 200 gsm by using the carding process combined with needle-punching.
Basalt fibres obtained from a woven fabric were prepared using a modified cutting and tearing process at STFI.
The basalt woven fabric were cut into squares (90x90mm) and fed to the tearing machine. The obtained recyclates were further processed into a nonwoven by using a dry laid process (carding process and cross lapper) combined with a mechanical bonding method (needle-punching).
As result a nonwoven fabric with an anisotropic structure (cross directed fibre orientation) and a mass per unit area of 200gsm wasobtained.
